This week on the Farm it was time for the young boys to get their check up! Although the Dairy is all about the female cows, every once and a while a male is born and it is up to Witter farm to care for them until they are old enough to head to auction. This week each steer was haltered and brought out of the bedded pack to the scale where their weights were recorded. Neptune weighed in at 642, Rudolf 832, Anchovie 609, Basil 684, Rosco 399, Rufus at 371 and finally Big Mac weighing in at 371. Several of these boys were halter trained by students last year for the Orono Royal Livestock Show that is held at Witter Farm each spring. This prior training played a huge part in the success of weighing as many of the boys were used to being led. Rufus on the other hand found it difficult to move faster than a snail. All the boys had a successful outing to the big blue scale but were happy to return to friends and take up their favorite past time. Eating!!!
