In the beginning of February one of our student milkers noticed that one of our cows, Dowager, had some abnormal milk. Right away we tested her for mastitis and the test came back that she had Klebsiella. Klebsiella is a bacteria that is found in the environment and can cause mastitis. Klebsiella can be really nasty and does not have a great survival rate. Mastitis is an inflammatory infection in the udder of a cow usually caused by bacteria. Like most farmers, we put our girl, Dowager’s, health and safety first, so we put her on antibiotics and gave her extra hay, we also checked on her extra each day. With antibiotics in her system we were unable to sell her milk for the health and safety of our consumers, so her milk gets discarded until it can be tested fee of all drug residues. As of recently, we are happy to say that Dowager has had all antibiotics out of her system and is starting to look healthy again! She is slowly regaining her strength and fighting off this nasty bacteria. Dowager is a tough little lady, and with her strength of character combined with our help, she looks like she will be making a full recovery!
