Hi everyone, this is Megan! This is my second semester working with the girls in the dairy barn and I’m not sure I could have been any more excited to come back and see them. Working with the cows here at UMaine has been something that I have really come to love, and while some people absolutely dread waking up at 3 AM to get ready for a morning milking, I’ve found that it doesn’t really bother me like it used to. Part of my reason for being so excited however was because I had been eagerly awaiting the newest addition to Witter Farm. Our first cow due to calve is a very energetic and friendly heifer that loves to get attention and her name is Blue. Despite this being her first-time Blue decided she was ready to calve five days early on January 25th, and gave birth to her 100lb baby boy Basil, (who’s already bigger than our three-week-old calf Anchovie!). Unfortunately, I had bad luck and ended up missing the birth, which happened in my last semester as well when I was working with Poohbear. She also decided to calve early but did it not only with no help, but with no one noticing until after her calf Poe was already out and clean. Even though I missed both my calvings it hasn’t changed my positive outlook for the semester. The calf barn will be re-opening soon and the new cow stalls look great, though we are still working on some finishing touches! The new kid on the block, Basil! First time mom, #395 Blue! The cow I was assigned to for last semester, #391 Poohbear!
