From my newly-acquired cow experience at Witter, I have learned that cows are like people in so many ways! Each semester, students are assigned cows due to calve and they witness and assist with the birthing and after-birth procedures for their designated cow and calf. On October 9th, I got a text at about 7 PM; Dulce was exhibiting signs of labor! We watched her for an hour and continued to check on her periodically. We stepped out to eat our fast food dinner and when we came back, Dollop was nearly born! We saw feet! All of the students came inside to watch the magic unfold, but we quickly realized that our momma, Dulce, seemed to have “stage fright.” We hid behind the wall and witnessed the whole thing! Just before midnight, Dollop was born!
This was an eye-opening experience for me and reminded me that cows have stresses and instincts too, just like we do! A little privacy goes a long way!
